BASF's Cementitious & Mortars Product Line: A Sustainable Evolution for the Construction Industry
BASF has long been at the forefront of material innovation, providing high-performance solutions for the construction industry. With the latest advancements in its cementitious and mortars product line, BASF is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, durability, and ease of application. This updated portfolio introduces new, environmentally friendly formulations while maintaining or exceeding the performance of previous industry-leading products.
The latest updates to BASF’s cementitious and mortars product line stem from a focused effort to eliminate red-listed ingredients such as APEO (alkylphenol ethoxylates), ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory standards. By replacing APEO-containing products with more sustainable alternatives, BASF has successfully developed high-performing, eco-conscious solutions that meet the stringent requirements of today’s construction market.
Among the key products in this new lineup are:
According to Christopher Hummel, BASF Marketing Manager Building Materials – Construction Solutions, these updates represent a major step forward for both performance and sustainability.
"We’ve been working on getting these products scaled up and out because of the sustainability drive to convert the products to non-red-listed ingredients," Hummel explains. "Now that we have them available commercially, customers can continue to develop new technologies with a sustainable solution they can trust."
BASF has engineered these formulations to be drop-in replacements for previous products, ensuring minimal disruption to users while providing additional benefits. Contractors’ familiar with previous generations of these products will find the new formulations offer similar workability, appearance, and performance, with added sustainability.
One of the standout improvements is Acronal 4624’s superior freeze-thaw resistance, an enhancement over its predecessor, Acronal 4623. This feature is particularly beneficial for contractors working in colder climates, ensuring the product maintains its integrity even after prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions.
Darrell Brevard, former BASF Technical Specialist, highlights the importance of matching previous product properties to ensure a seamless transition for users.
"As we transitioned from APEO-containing products to APEO-free alternatives, we worked to make the new versions as close as possible to their predecessors, minimizing modifications for our customers," Brevard says. "For example, Acronal 4624 is almost a complete drop-in replacement for the industry standard, giving additional freeze protection while maintaining the same appearance, smell, and application properties."
BASF’s new cementitious and mortar solutions cater to a broad range of applications, from decorative stamped concrete and bonding agents to patch and repair work, waterproofing, and self-leveling underlayments. Some notable uses include:
The construction industry is continually adapting to environmental regulations, sustainability goals, and performance expectations. BASF’s latest formulations address several key industry trends:
According to Hummel, the goal is to ensure these materials perform well in real-world conditions. "Our products are tested in extreme temperatures — both high and low — to ensure they cure properly and maintain durability over time," Hummel explains. "Whether it’s a contractor working in a scorching desert or in freezing conditions up north, they can rely on these solutions to meet their needs."
Contractors and industry professionals have eagerly anticipated these product enhancements. With an emphasis on performance, regulatory compliance, and sustainability, BASF’s new product line offers solutions that outperform previous generations, providing peace of mind for users who depend on these materials for critical construction projects.
"Customers were anticipating these updates because they depend on these materials for various applications," Hummel notes. "The performance has been there in the prior products, but now they can confidently move forward with solutions that meet today’s environmental standards while maintaining the durability they expect." Brevard adds that ease of use has also been a priority.
"Contractors get used to a certain product — its texture, its smell, the way it behaves in application," Brevard explains. "We wanted to make sure that as we transitioned to APEO-free alternatives, the change would be seamless for them."
As BASF continues to drive innovation in building materials, these new cementitious and mortar products demonstrate the company’s unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. Whether used for structural repairs, decorative finishes, or waterproofing solutions, this advanced product line ensures that builders and contractors have the tools they need to construct with confidence.
"We have a diverse product line that covers a wide range of applications," Brevard concludes. "Each product is designed to provide specific benefits, ensuring that our customers have the best possible solution for their projects."
