As an innovative, solvent borne polyol specifically designed for direct-to-metal (DTM) applications, Joncryl® xDTM-B is a product with an impressive selection of properties.

Prioritizing performance

Whether it’s high gloss retention or superior hardness, DTM coatings need to prioritize a number of attributes to work as intended.

Joncryl xDTM-B is a resin that adheres well to multiple metal substrates, including traditionally challenging metals, and comes ready for the toughest of challenges.

Not only does it have 95% gloss retention after seven days in a humidity chamber, but superior early hardness, hardness levels that double that of the competition after both three- and seven-day testing, and excellent corrosion resistance. It also has excellent UV resistance, competitive pot life, and good dry time. With a low VOC that allows coating formulations down to 2.1 lb/gal (250 g/L), it’s also friendlier for the environment.

“This product can be used anywhere you need DTM performance,” says Bob Ober, NA Commercial Marketing Manager at BASF. “It has superior performance across a wide range of metal substrates. We’ve evaluated aluminum, cold rolled steel, and galvanized steel across a host of application tests.”

Best of both worlds

Joncryl xDTM-B marks the next iteration of Joncryl xDTM innovation.

“The chemistry involved in the polyol resin hasn’t changed from its predecessor,” Ober says. “The major change is truly in the solvent cut, which allows us to better meet the demands of the market.”

A key differentiator for the product comes by adapting 2K PU coatings for use as a DTM solution.

“In a traditional system, on your substrate, you have a primer and topcoat,” says Nicholas Branham, Technical Specialist at BASF. “The chemistry of this resin combines the key features of a primer and topcoat in one. From a primer’s perspective, you need corrosion protection and adhesion. Then from a topcoat, you have your aesthetics, high gloss, chemical resistance, and UV protection. The DTM mono-coat is developed in a way to grab all of that.”

Quality without compromise

Thanks to the number of quality attributes, Joncryl xDTM-B is a solution that doesn’t compromise between performance and aesthetic goals.

With proven use-cases spanning agricultural and construction equipment (ACE), auto refinish, general industrial, and commercial fleet, truck, and bus, it’s a solution that’s as versatile as it is high-performing.

The proof is in the results. Branham adds that, in testing Joncryl xDTM-B against a competitive polyol in our DTM formulation and a commercially available DTM coating, the Joncryl xDTM-B based formulation outperforms at least one or both in all nine application tests we evaluated.
